Cross-Country Skiing

Extensive Trail Network

Saariselkä offers excellent opportunities for cross-country skiing. The area has a total of 200 km of ski trails, including 34 km of illuminated trails and 5 km of snowmaking trails. The artificial snow “first-snow trail” usually opens in late October or early November, as soon as the temperatures allow.

Long Ski Season

The ski season in Saariselkä lasts until May. The trails are suitable for all types of skiers. A 22 km dog trail is available for those who want to bring their dog, which must be leashed and whose waste must be collected. For enjoying the moonlight and Northern Lights, the 10 km Moonlight Trail provides an easy route with long, gentle hills. Lighting along the trail is dimmed to enhance the view of the moon and aurora.

Trails feature maintained rest stops, cafés, and restaurants where you can take breaks. Trails vary in difficulty, from fitness skiing to competitive courses, and accommodate both skating and classic skiing techniques.

Wilderness Skiing

It is also possible to ski in the wilderness using fell skis, which can be rented locally. When skiing in remote areas, safety and careful route planning are essential. Natural trails may contain bogs, rocks, and streams. Ice on lakes and marshes takes time to form, and avalanches can occur on steep slopes. Ski instructors are available to refresh skills for beginners or to refine techniques for experienced skiers.

Outside the season, trails are maintained and improved for the next winter, including bridge repairs and trail smoothing to enhance safety and comfort.
